What Are Clean Meats in the Bible?

Most men never think about where their meat comes from, but God does. Long before food labels, macros, or meal prep, the Bible gave us a clear standard for what’s clean and what’s not. And it still matters today.

God’s Original Food Filter

In Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, God told His people exactly which animals were clean and unclean.
Clean meats are animals that:

  • Have a split hoof and chew the cud (like cattle, sheep, and deer).
  • Live in water with fins and scales (like salmon or tilapia).
  • Birds that eat seeds or insects (like chicken, turkey, and dove).

Unclean meats include pigs, shellfish, rabbits, eagles, and anything that doesn’t fit those filters. God wasn’t being random. He was protecting His people’s health and holiness.

“You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.” Leviticus 11:47 (NIV)

The Science Behind God’s Wisdom

Modern studies show unclean meats carry higher risks of parasites, inflammation, and heart disease. For example, processed pork and shellfish are linked to higher cholesterol and infections. God’s design wasn’t superstition, it was divine nutrition.

Clean meats like grass-fed beef, wild fish, and free-range chicken are higher in protein, omega-3s, and essential nutrients your body needs to rebuild and recover.

Eat to Honor God

When you eat clean meats, you’re not just choosing better health, you’re honoring God’s original blueprint. You’re saying, “Lord, I trust Your wisdom over man’s convenience.”

If you want to rebuild your body and reconnect your faith through food, start where Daniel and God’s people started with purity, simplicity, and obedience.
